Tech transfer will stimulate universities’ economic viability – NOTAP

The Director- General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), Dr. DanAzumi Ibrahim, has said Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Offices (IPTTOs) established by NOTAP in some Nigerian tertiary and research institutions are capable of stimulating the economic viability of the institutions.
Dr. Ibrahim made this statement in his opening remark during the commissioning of IPTTO established by NOTAP at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), last week, according to a statement yesterday from one of the NOTAP’s spokesmen, Raymond Ogbu.
He stated that NOTAP as a regulatory organization saw the huge amount of money being expended by the country in importation of foreign technology and decided with the collaboration of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2006 to introduce the IPTTOs in Nigerian tertiary and research institutions to stimulate demand driven research.
The DG further noted that the establishment of IPTTO in UDUS was to inculcate the intellectual property culture in the researchers and ensure that researchers no longer carry out research as mere academic exercise but engage in R&D activities that will generatep Patent that could subsequently generate royalty for the institution.
