An 18-year-old man, Abdullah Ashiru, was yesterday arraigned before the Ebute-Meta magistrate’s court reckless riding of his commercial motorcycle and non-possession of a rider’s licence.

 The police said they arrested Ashiru along the Lagos- Badagry expressway last Sunday while he was riding an unregistered motorcycle. According to the police report, the defendant was also said to have been riding the motorcycle in a way that constitutes harm to other motorists. 

 But Ashiru denied the two charges levelled against him by the police. His brother, who wouldn’t give his name, told our correspondent that the accusations were false, saying the police had actually demanded a sum of N3000 from Ashiru but he failed to give them as he did not have enough cash on him. The brother also said he had asked Ashiru to ride the motorcycle to his (brother’s) home but he was stopped on the way by the police. 

The accused claimed he actually had his rider’s licence with him when the police arrested him, but the police said otherwise.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs B.O. Ope-Agbe, adjourned the case to January 15, 2017 for hearing and released the defendant on bail.
