Teenager gets 15 strokes of cane for stealing car battery

A Kaduna Magistrates’ Court on Thursday sentenced a 19-year-old teenager, Clement Baba, to receive 15 strokes of a cane for stealing a car battery.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, delivered the judgment after Baba pleaded guilty and asked the court for leniency.

Emmanuel stated that the punishment would have been much stiffer if Baba had not saved the court the time and effort of a protracted prosecution.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Chidi Leo, told the court that the complainant, Sarah Madaki of Narayi High Cost, Kaduna, had reported the matter at the Barnawa Police Station on August 3.

Leo said that the convict was known to the complainant and had previously done menial jobs for her, even in her absence.

On the day of the incident, the complainant, while at work, called Baba to her house to wash her husband’s car. During the process, he removed the car battery. (NAN)

The prosecutor added that the complainant’s daughter caught Baba as he was attempting to leave with the battery.

Breaking down in tears, the convict told the court, “I am very sorry, sir, and I promise I will not do it again.”
