An Upper Area Court 3 sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, on Monday sentenced a 19-year-old barber, Bashir Khamiss, to 18 months’ imprisonment for stealing and criminal trespass.

The accused had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and criminal trespass.

The Judge, Yahaya Mohammed, sentenced him to one year’s imprisonment without an option of fine for theft, and jailed him for another six months for criminal trespass.

Muhammed, however, gave the convict N10,000 option of fine for the sentence for criminal trespass.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ibrahim Gukwat, had told the court that the case was reported to the police station on Oct. 30, 2017 by one Ahmed Hassan, a member of a vigilante that arrested the accused.

Gukwat said that police investigation revealed that the accused had stolen 19 car batteries.

“He sold 10 car batteries he stole at give-away prices while nine of the batteries had been recovered.

“The accused sold the batteries cheaply ranging from N3000 to N5000, depending on his customer’s bargaining power,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
