A chief magistrate court in Kaduna has sent a 19-year-old labourer, Bashiru Ibrahim, to a correctional facility for allegedly raping a 6-year-old girl.
Ibrahim, a resident of Jere town in Kachia Local Government Area of the state, is being tried for allegedly having carnal knowledge of a minor.
At the court sitting yesterday, Magistrate Lukman Sidi refused to take Ibrahim’s plea and ordered the police to return the case file to the Kaduna State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
He said, “Due to the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail to the accused. The case file should be duplicated and sent to the office of the DPP for advice.”
Magistrate Lukman then adjourned the matter to November 12 for mention.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, told the court that the matter was transferred to the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID) from Jere, Kaduna on September 29.
Leo noted that the offence contravenes Section 209 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law 2017 saying, in the course of investigation, the defendant voluntarily confessed to the crime.
