The Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has made an appealed to the federal government over the lingering crisis on the imposed N1.04 trillion fine on MTN telecommunications Nigeria for its non-compliance to the regulation on Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration.
ATCON National President, Engr. Lanre Ajayi made the plea during an event to honour the Minister of Communication, Barrister Adebayo Shittu.
The imposed N1.04 trillion which was slammed on MTN by the telecom regulatory body, NCC since October, 2015 but was later reduced to N780 billion has generated controversies among stakeholders and government including the National Assembly.
Ajayi noted that the South African telecommunications giant had lost its reputation, revenue, market value and has actually learnt its mistake.
He said the plea by ATCON for leniency over the fine was based on its conviction that the breach was not done with criminal intention to injure their national security. 
However, he urged the federal government to review the fine downward to a figure that was not more than MTN’s profit in a year.
