The Director of Consumers Affairs Bureau of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Abdullahi Maikano, has allayed fears that telecommunication masts caused cancer.
Maikano who was reacting to a question that telecom masts caused cancer at NCC’s 87th edition of the consumer outreach programme in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said there was no scientific proof that the mast caused cancer, adding that Nigerians should not entertain any fear about the telecommunication structure installed by various service providers across the country.
“It has not been scientifically proven anywhere that telecommunication masts cause cancer. I want to let you know that there is nothing like that. We should not discourage service providers from investing in the telecom industry by carrying out unfounded rumour,” he said.
He said the consumer outreach programme was one of the initiatives of the NCC to bring together telecoms services consumers in the urban areas, the network operators and regulators to discuss and proffer solutions to consumer-related issues and ensure they had value for money through effective service delivery.
He said the consumers’ forum sought to educate telecom consumers and other stakeholders on contemporary issues generating interest in the industry, stressing that the forum would also serve as a feedback mechanism for the commission in making regulatory intervention for the benefit of both consumers and service providers.
He said the commission has developed a series of initiatives with the main goal of empowering consumers with appropriate information that would ensure that their rights were not only protected but their choices provided them with value for money.
