The first quarter of this year marks the tenth anniversary of the Galaxy S line of Samsung smartphone products. Three anniversary smartphones were unveiled on 21 February 2019 in San Francisco, CA, in the names S10E, S10, and S10 Plus (S10+). The top of the line (S10+), Samsung’s best phone yet, has been matched against the most advanced iPhone, or iPhone XS Max, and it seems that the S10+ is ahead overall in terms of the features and prices.
The unveiled features of S10+ are so enticing you would want to upgrade. This phone demonstrates that the ideas to still significantly improve smartphone technologies may not be as much in short supply as we had thought. Displays are what set Samsung phones apart, and the new phones are no exception. The S10 screen covers the whole front of the phone, top-to-bottom and side-to-side, and sensors in the front camera have been seamlessly integrated into the display itself. The display has the world’s first Infinity (Dynamic) Display on AMOLED. The latter is advertised as giving next-generation cinematic experience, with 16 million colors at 100 percent color volume. Samsung believes that S10 gives the most color-accurate display ever on a mobile phone. The display supports HDR 10+, which means that you can enjoy your movies in stunning details. The S10 also uses Dynamic Tone Mapping, which optimizes the brightness levels so that small details can be accurately captured.
The camera in S10+ is big deal: 3 lenses for back-facing cameras and two for selfies. The triple back-facing lenses consist of the primary, telephoto, and ultra-wide types. (The ultra-wide feature allows you to get more of your shots so that you can take ultra-wide photos.) The camera will switch to the right lens automatically depending on the environment. You can take high quality photos in daylight or at night! The camera is described as being super steady and video-editing as being easy to do. The Adobe Premiere Rush is reportedly available for powerful editing of videos.
Embedded directly beneath the screen on the front of S10 is the world’s first ultrasonic finger print scanner. In place of face recognition, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ use ultrasonic display-based sensors, while the budget model has an optical sensor. The ultrasonic sensor is a cutting-edge technology that uses an ultrasonic pulse and its reverberations (reflections) to generate a complex and highly secure 3D map of your fingerprint. On the other hand, optical sensors merely take photos of your fingerprint. With this technology, the scanner performs in bright sunlight and wet conditions. The scanner also reportedly protects your data with machine learning algorithms that are updated automatically, just like your security updates. The S10 uses Wi-Fi 6.0 which is 20 percent faster than the previous version.
The battery power of S10+ is superior to that of iPhone XS Max (4100 versus 3174 mAh). Both support wireless charging, but S10+ supports Wireless Charging 2.0 which is faster than the one in the iPhone. The S10+ also has wireless power share (reverse-charging). That is, you can place any device next to your S10+ to charge the device! So you can transform your device into a wireless charging pad. Wireless-charging the phone itself is done also with Wireless Charging 2.0, which charges the phone from 0 to 100 percent 36 percent faster than before. Note that the battery of S10+ lasts up to 25 percent longer than that of S9+ because Samsung added a new layer of intelligence that delivers more efficient power management. This works by identifying the apps you use less often and automatically optimizes the CPU settings to consume less power, a technology that gets smarter over time, as more training data for intelligence is collected.
The S10E has aluminium finish, whereas the S10 and S10+ come in one of two prismatic ceramic finishes – black or white. In terms of the differences between the phones, S10 is the premium Galaxy, S10+ has these features as well, plus a bigger screen (6.4 in), a better camera, and a longer battery life. S10E has all the features but in a more compact form factor.
The memory of the S10 phones is awesome. Whereas iPhone has 4 GB of random-access memory (RAM), and 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB of disk space, the S10 phones have a base RAM of 8 GB and 128 GB of storage, with the ceramic options having up to 512 GB storage. The S10+ has 12 GB RAM and 1 terabyte (1TB) of storage. In the words of Samsung’s infomercial, “you have laptop storage without the laptop.” With standard micro SD slot you can expand the storage to 1.5TB. “It’s like having a supercomputer in your pocket.”
The three S10 models range in sizes from 5.8 inches (the size of S9) to 6.4 inches (which is slightly larger than the size of the S9 Plus). Though cheaper than the iPhones, the S10 phones are not cheap in absolute terms. In the US they will retail for $749, $899, and $999, respectively for S10E, S10, and S10+. Preordering the S10 phones started on the day they were unveiled.
