Tems recently recounted on her time imprisoned in Uganda in 2020, saying she feels honoured to have gone through it.
In a recent interview with ESMagazine, the singer described being locked up in a small cell with several other women and being afraid of being dealt with if she made a mistake.
She said, “Prison was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I actually feel honoured to have had because otherwise, I would never have thought about these people, and to be in their presence was very humbling,” she said.
‘I asked one of the girls there, “Do they beat people up here? Am I gonna be beat up?’ And she was like, ‘Only if you misbehave.’”
Late in 2020, Tems and Nigerian artist Omah Lay were detained in Uganda on December 13, for participating in a “unauthorised concert” and violating COVID-19 rules.
