Tension is said to be building at the Federal Colleges of Education Yola and Abeokuta as federal government delays announcing substantive provosts for the schools.
The provosts of both colleges were said to have completed their first tenures in office in September 2015 and their names were recommended for renewal after consultations between the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and the ministry of education. The names have been sent to the presidency for approval, but government has continued to drag its feet.
A source in the ministry said academic and non-academic staff in the two colleges have displayed excessive anxiety for months, awaiting the appointments of their chief accounting officers. The source said without the provost, the leadership structure was incomplete and some key decisions may not be implemented.
In related development, the NCCE and the ministry have conducted recruitment interview for the provost of FCE, Zaria. The previous interview was cancelled over irregularities but a source at the ministry said some of the candidates who attended the interview were facing inquiries “yet their names were shortlisted.”
When contacted the Executive Secretary of the NCCE Professor Bappa Aliyu-Mohammed‎ said Commission was waiting for approval from the presidency on appointment of provosts of FCE Yola and Abeokuta.
‎He said “the matter is beyond the Commission; is in the presidency.”
