A court in Senegal has doubled the sentence of a Muslim cleric, Ibrahima Seye, who was handed a one-year prison term four months ago for promoting terrorism, BBC Afrique reports.
Mr Seye, who is a geography and history teacher, will now serve a minimum of two years in prison after prosecutors appealed for a harsher punishment against him.
The 38-year-old was found guilty of “proven sympathies” for extremist groups in sermons he delivered in Kolda, southern Senegal.
Senegal has until now been spared the deadly jihadist attacks that have hit neighbouring countries this year, including the killing of 30 people in Burkina Faso’s capital in January and of 19 people at an Ivory Coast beach resort in March, AFP reports.
