The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has described tertiary institutions as hotspots for drug trafficking and abuse.
The agency’s Kwara State Commandant of NDLEA, Mrs Fatima Popoola, said this when she led a team of NDLEA officials on a courtesy visit to the management of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilọrin.
She said, “Drug abuse has become a time bomb that requires immediate attention and action from all stakeholders.
“Tertiary institutions have been identified as vulnerable hotspots for drug trafficking and abuse.”

She, therefore, called for collaboration between the polytechnic and the command to find solutions to the alarming rate of substance abuse among youth, especially students.
Mrs Popoola advised the management to collaborate with the command in conducting integrity tests for prospective students with the aim of counselling those who were drug addicts.
Responding, the Rector, Engr Abdul Jimoh Muhammed, disclosed that the wellbeing and safety of the polytechnic students were paramount to the management.
He said that he would work tirelessly with NDLEA to create a hostile environment for drug abusers and assured of the polytechnic’s commitment to implement drug policies on campus by launching the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA).
