Yobe Water Corporation said it will review water bills upward to increase revenue and ease the financial burden on government in providing public urban water services in the state.

The General Manager of the corporation, Engr Ahmed Usman disclosed, Thursday, in an interview with Daily Trust in Damaturu.

He said majority of customers are defaulting bills payment despite effort by the state to maintain premium position of charging lowest water tariffs in the country.

"Since the creation of Yobe State, water bill has remain N200 per month, its the lowest in the country but majority of customers doesn’t pay. Also, they connect illegally after disconnection", he said.

He explained that the upward review of the tariff is significant at this stage to find reliable maintainance solutions.

"It’s very rare for government to accord special priority to Water as was done by Gaidam administration. We don’t want another government to come and neglect the system without a fallback position", he said.

He noted that the state government has sustain the most hygienic boreholes water supply system in the urban areas, despite the cost, to maintain healthy population and environment.

"We have 276 functional boreholes in urban areas, in Damaturu alone we have 76 boreholes that consumes 48,000 liters of diesel monthly and government has given almost 100 percent subsidy. So, the N200 paid by the customers monthly is inconsequential compared to the maintenance cost", he added.
