Members of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN) recently staged a rally in Lagos, demanding the removal of bottlenecks to the growth of the textile industry in Nigeria.

The rally, led by the national president of the union, Comrade John Adaji and general secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu, among other leaders and affiliate associations, was staged in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of NUTGTWN.

Hundreds of members of the union participated in the rally which kicked off at the Textile Labour House along Acme road Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, carrying placards with inscriptions such as: ‘We need Craft Market to sell our products’, ‘High Cost of Cotton and Dyeing Materials is killing our business’, ‘End Smuggling Now’, ‘Save Local Industries’,” among others.

The national president of the union, Comrade Adaji, charged the Federal Government to guarantee uninterrupted electricity supply for the smooth running of the industries.

“We need constant electricity and it must be affordable. We need affordable gas for the local industries. We need a local market which means government should walk their talk to patronise what we produce in Nigeria,” he said.

The deputy general secretary of the union, Comrade Yusuf Bello, urged government to improve the textile and garment industry by supporting existing factories in order for   old factories that have folded up to be re-opened for operation.
