Residents of Kaduna State, especially in Kaduna metropolis, have noticed with concern, the ongoing altercations between Governor Nasir El-Rufai and Senator Shehu Sani. Those who have been following the ugly event recalled that this altercation started even before El-Rufai clocked 100 days in office. They accused Shehu Sani (representing Kaduna Central) of his seemingly confrontational posture against the government from day one. As it is, this has led to the suspension of the senator at his ward from the ruing All Progressives Congress (APC). This, the residents said, has been unnecessarily heating the polity and capable of truncating the relative peace enjoyed by the good people of Kaduna State.
It is worrisome how the senator is going about his things in the state to which political watchers described as anti-party activities and confrontational attitude towards President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Malam Nasir el-Rufa’i which he started 18 months ago.
It was based on this alleged anti-party activity that the senator was suspended, and they further accused him of having lost focus of his primary duty of making laws at the National Assembly and has resorted to blackmail and negative propaganda against every government policy and action.
The constitution guarantees every citizen the right to do what is genuinely upright so much as it does not infringe on the rights of the people or threaten the general welfare of the people and the country, so if Shehu Sani cannot stop his style of activism, it is his right to remain so, it, however, becomes a different thing if such activism is drawing the err of the public to the extent that youths in Kaduna metropolis have started demonstrating against him. It means it is therefore unbecoming of him to still view himself as an activist instead of being a partner in progress and bringing development to the electorates.
We also note that of the three senators from Kaduna State, it is only Shehu Sani who has taken his criticism of Mr. President and the governor of Kaduna State to a worrisome level.
It is learnt that the senator has an axe to grind with Dr. Uba Sani, an aide of the governor, the senator should stop blaming El-Rufa’i or Uba Sani for his woes. Given this worrisome development, APC members have started contemplating a process of his recall from the senate as he has not done anything for the seven LGAs that voted massively for the APC in the 2015 general elections of which he is a beneficiary.
We hear that all these inactions of Shehu Sani are for his 2019 governorship ambition to which he can rightly aspire. It is the right of every qualified Nigerian to aspire to whatever political office he/she so desires, but we think this should not be by causing distraction and undermining the peace of the state. In any case, it is even too early to talk of 2019 as we are yet to even reach half year of the mandate and also in view of the deplorable situation the current government in the state met mid last year.
The senator should henceforth channel his energy to law making in the Senate and leave Governor el-Rufa’i alone to concentrate on reclaiming the state so as to better the lives of our citizens and make Kaduna great again.
El-Rufai met Kaduna State in a state of terror and insecurity, this is to the knowledge of residents. As if we were in the North-east, we were experiencing bombings, kidnappings and the rest of that. Coupled with that was the slow and steady decline in the fortunes of the state. Now, all that have been halted, and reconstruction of the state is massively ongoing.
