To many people the solution to this problem is to provide jobs; and that’s precisely what the FCT Minister, Alhaji Bala Mohammed has been trying to do. That is why the recent action by the Senate to empower the FCTA to now collect revenue from all properties across the territory is considered the single most powerful tool that will solve this hydra-headed problem of unemployment, which of course is not limited to Abuja.
The legislation will enable the FCTA to collect revenue from all properties the way that is being practised in Lagos State.  When the law becomes operational and the units it creates are up and running, there will be jobs for not only the youths but others beside, thereby facilitating the development of the city.
Funds secured from this internally generated revenue (IGR) which the minister has envisaged would be about five hundred billion naira will greatly help in uplifting the status of Abuja and improving the lives of FCT residents and by extension solving the problem of joblessness and decrepit infrastructure.
The Senate’s action is therefore a commendable step, one that will help the administration to secure more funds needed for the procurement of critical facilities in the newly opened districts of Abuja. In fact it has been describe as one of the most crucial moves taken since the creation of Abuja in 1976 aimed at facilitating the development of the city.  It is indeed a landmark move in the history of the development of Abuja. The essence of the legislation was captured by the Senate FCT Committee Chairman, Senator Smart Adeyemi who described the action of the Senate as a bold attempt to fast-track the pace of development of the FCT, and a clear demonstration that the Senate was determined to bring to the doorstep of FCT residents dividends of democracy through the provision of enhanced facilities.
Senate President David Mark had made similar when he disclosed that the Senate was determined to assist the FCT to cater for the residents of the city. It was fitting that Bala Mohammed and Alhaji Ibrahim Bomoi the FCT Director of Treasury were full of gratitude to the Senate for its action and described it as not only timely but a step in the right direction.
