Untreated borehole water exposing Gombe to cholera outbreak

A cholera outbreak was declared in Gombe State over the week by the Ministry of Health, which was reported to have killed four people, leaving other 48 people hospitalised.

The cholera struck six out of 11 political wards of Gombe metropolitan Local Government Area, in addition to three other LGAs of Akko, Dukku and Yamaltu/Deba. Investigation by North East Trust have revealed that the communities that are worst hit by the outbreak in Gombe metropolis, are in the areas that mostly depended on untreated water from commercial boreholes.

Jos communities fight over cemetery ownership

No fewer than four people were injured following a fracas between members of Anaguta and Hausa in Yelwa community of Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The disagreement began three days back after a gutter was dug beside a cemetery by the Hausa community to prevent people from passing through, a decision that angered the Anaguta community, who claimed the land where the dead were buried belonged to them. The disagreement sparked a serious clash leading to the injuring of four persons.

Evans loses appeal against conviction

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal, yesterday, dismissed an appeal filed by notorious kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans, against the judgment of Justice Hadizat Rabiu-Shagari, of the Federal High Court, over his seized 25 trucks by the Nigeria Police.

The three Justices of the Appeal Court dismissed Evans’ appeal for lacking in merit.
Troops bust illegal refineries in Bayelsa, Rivers

Nigerian soldiers attached to Operation Delta Safe have busted illegal refineries being operated at the Orutoru area in Bayelsa State as well as Olutoro and Adamakiri villages in Bonny LGA, Udeyeada Community in Andoni LGA of Rivers State.

The troops, during the operation, discovered and deactivated several other illegal refining sites with a total of 21 ovens, 12 dugout pits and 58 metal storage tanks in those places at Bayelsa and Rivers States as well as Opuebubor Creek in Warri South LGA of Delta State in the South-South zone of the country.
