The death of Bashir Musa, a 300 level student of Federal University Dutse, Jigwa State, in a fight over a girlfriend last Friday is sad to say the least.
According to report, Bashir was killed when his girlfriend, Aisha Sale, who is a student of Jigawa State Polytechnic, and said to have about half a dozen other boyfriends, including the late Bashir, all from the same university visited one of them in Yalwawa Quarters of the state capital.
The deceased, along with five other boyfriends went to the house of the boyfriend the girl was visiting, where a fight ensued that led to the death of Bashir.
Parents, particularly those with daughters in higher institutions of learning would be disturbed by this story. It confirms stories that some girls (students) actually concerned themselves more with boyfriends to the extent of behaving like prostitutes while their parents were happily thinking that their daughters were in school.
However, even in the case of the boys, parents have not sent them to engage in having girlfriends to the detriment of their studies, let alone engage in fights over them.
When some people refuse to allow their daughters to higher institutions of learning, they are derided and dubbed as backward, but some are afraid of them getting involved in relationships with boys and other forms of lifestyle that are alien to the way they were brought up.
And such wayward girls make bad examples, and ground for parents to rely on not to allow their daughters to pursue their education further.
You can imagine where your daughter leaves studies to visit boyfriends: only God knows what would happen there.
Some would say it is the change of time, so parents should be flexible. Well, as a far as the parents are Muslims, and Islam forbids pre-marital sex, parents should never accept this waywardness in the name of going with the tide of time.
It is this type of exposure that is making children of nowadays to be impudent to their parents and other elders that they should respect. They feel that that they are equal to everyone.
In the higher institutions where there is cultism, they engage in fights over girlfriends and boyfriends that may become fatal.
Even though in the case of the Federal University Dutse, the boyfriends that went to fight their rival may not be cultists, but their style of going to attack him is something similar to cult war.
I cannot even imagine the logic of these boys, if six of you have one girlfriend, is she worthy enough to go and fight a seventh boyfriend for? How many more does she have?
I thought if a man has a girlfriend, he is supposed to be the only one and if he finds she has another one that she would naturally not tell him herself, he would be angry, so how come six boys know they have one girlfriend and even go as a group to fight a rival?
Perhaps fathers and uncles should lecture our young men on the ways of life.
Many assume that only girls staying on campus become wayward or students’ houses as the case may be, which is understandable as they don’t sleep at home, but those that live at their parents’ houses also contrive ways to be involved with men.
In campuses it is an open secret that some perform abortion or give birth in bathrooms which cause scandal. But it seems the school authorities are powerless; after all students of higher institutions are not restricted and disciplined like those in secondary school. So morally they do as they pleased, ‘enjoying’ the liberty.
Nonetheless, parents should keep guiding their children and praying for them, because of the challenges of this age where there are many things to corrupt innocent children.
For example, I was complaining the other day, where on my phone pictures would keep coming up asking if I wanted to download. And these pictures are the so-called adult videos. Even if you cancel or decline they would keep coming up.
So young people can easily download such phonography and become exposed at a young age to all sorts of things.
It is like people must be corrupted by all means.
All the same, this case shows that the girl-child should know that she should do more, more than the boy-child in fact in order to preserve her morals either in school or in the work place and any other place for that matter.
She should not be a bad example to others; she should show that by going to school she is a better person worthy of emulation.
As for the death of Bashir in such circumstances, the university and other institutions of higher learning should pay more attention to the conduct of their students living in the so-called students’ hostels outside campuses.
