The forth coming YLF annual summit

The NBA Young Lawyers Forum in her bid to articulate the welfare of young lawyers and address the issues concerning their welfare and professional growth organises an annual summit where these issues are deliberated upon by both participants and guest speakers. Simply put, it is a summit all about the challenges of a young lawyer in the legal profession, and how best to tackle them.
The YLF annual summit provides the opportunity for young lawyers far and wide to mingle with each other, rekindle old friendships, share experiences of how practice has been these couple of years and proffer viable solutions on how to navigate through.
Research and experience have shown that networking is about building long term relationships and a good reputation over time, it strengthens relationship, births fresh ideas, raises the profile of a young lawyer, creates access to opportunities and open doors to valuable suggestions and guidance.
This year’s summit is heading to the Heartbeat of the nation, Benin, the capital and largest city of Edo State. According to wikivoyage, Benin City dates back to pre-colonial times and boasts of one of the most advanced and organised kingdoms before the arrival of the British.
The summit is usually a three-day event starting with registration of members {young lawyers yet to be members of the ‘forum’ will be required to do so at the venue by doing the needful}, then breakfast sessions with guest speakers educating participants on different aspects of the profession necessary for career growth; sporting activities to keep the mind and body physically fit; social activities like the young lawyers party to spur up the excitement and also confers CLE credit units.
Capacity building for a young lawyer in turn benefits the law firm since the first point of practice to everything learned at the summit would be applied to the activities of the firm, hence a law firm no matter how small can support a young lawyer by whatever means to ensure most of us don’t miss this opportunity to hang around colleagues we haven’t seen in a while due to difference in geographical location.
Many young wigs reading this article would so much want to partake in this enlightening event but may be prevented by certain impediments, most of which is funds, a young wig desirous of attending would have to put into consideration upkeep allowance for the time he would be away and not all have the pockets to foot the bills independently.
The support required for a large turnout of young wigs in the summit is not solely dependent on the shoulders of the law firm alone, the various NBA branches and concerned senior colleagues can also encourage the participation of its young members by providing certain amenities that will make things easy for its members as they travel, this includes bus {for branches who have}, provision for accommodation and feeding of its members et al.
The annual summit is scheduled to happen sometime in July {official date yet to be released} but like a wise man once said, “the best preparation for good work tomorrow is to do good work today”, meaning all hands must be on deck today for a successful summit tomorrow.
Active networking is vital to career growth in the legal profession, it helps expand one’s knowledge base of the law as practiced in other jurisdictions, discover novel areas to delve into as a lawyer, establish connect that could be useful in the not too distant future, familiarise with the challenges of other young wigs and how they have fared, etcetera.
Young lawyers who are yet to leave their comfort zones since they began practice now have the opportunity to experience life somewhere else, this writer can only hope they utilise this opportunity.
Ramadan kareem to all our Muslim readers and followers all over the world.
