which is the same as nepotism because it seems only persons from a particular region of the country are being considered. For instance, it was this SGF who against laid-down civil service regulations wrote to the PenCom to accept one woman from his state as acting DG knowing full well she was overdue for retirement and she has remained in that capacity till date. As if all these maladies are not enough, the same man engineered a bill through the Presidency and sent to the National Assembly to lower the qualification requirement stipulated by the subsisting law solely aimed at smoothening her way to be confirmed as the substantive DG. Thanks to the perception of legislators, the National Assembly rejected the bill.
This “sad” development did not discourage those trying to turn rules on their head. Soon after, the woman’s name suddenly resurfaced at the National Assembly, this time for confirmation as PenCom Commissioner which they did last week, with Former Bauchi Governor Ahmed Mu’azu confirmed as the Chairman.
With the appointment of Ahmed Muazu from the North as the Chairman of PenCom, the usual stage for nepotistic drama has been set. Like the case with 80 percent of our top class revenue spinning agencies (fiscal/ finance MDA’s), the new PenCom DG will obviously come from the geopolitical zone of the same people who have been manipulating the process ever since.
Nevertheless, we should remind ourselves that the appointment of Muazu from the North East is not and should not be the justification for appointing the next DG from the South East. This is because the Corps Marshal (DG) and the Chairman of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), both come from the same geopolitical zone, that is the South East. We should keep in mind Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan, which is still in circulation. Just wait and see.
