‘The kind of govs we‘ll pick today’

As the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections take place today, Daily Trust Saturday speaks to some Nigerians on the kind of leaders they will choose.

Amina Samuel, 40, Public Affairs Analyst, Kaduna

I intend to vote a leader who is honest, God fearing and is able to sympathise with the people. He is someone I think will restore peace and harmonious relationship among the people of the state, because right now Kaduna has been polarized along religious lines and people are scared, especially during this election period. My candidate should is one I hope will unite the people, restore confidence and trust and do away with religious barriers. He would bring peace and a lasting solution to the state’s challenges, and most importantly, let our votes count today without any form of rigging.

Abdurrahman Muhammed, Entrepreneur, Kaduna

I am for the candidate who is experienced in handling complex situations. Also, one who can put in place the needed infrastructure for economic development of the state. He is also tough in some of his decisions and in handling state affairs. I believe a leader should be firm, courageous and be ready to take tough decisions. My reason for voting him today is if he can empower the teeming youths in Kaduna and bring sanity in the educational sector by redeeming its standard. Most of the people in the state need an iron hand and not a sluggish person to do the right thing. I did not benefit directly from the candidate I am voting. However, because of his leadership qualities I will vote for him.

Abdullahi Andussalam, 34, Journalist, Kaduna

I will vote for the candidate who will be passionate about his followers. He is the kind of leader who will meet all his obligations and bring social amenities to the people to reduce suffering. He will also provide job opportunities rather than expel many workers and increase the poverty level in the state. Looking at our economic situation today, I will choose a candidate who can bring economic growth by providing job opportunities and also attract foreign investors. He will also revive economic hubs like the textile companies and other areas of the economy that will be of benefit to the entire people of the state.

Bimbo Alatishe, 40, Trader, Lagos

I am looking forward the electing a governor who will create a friendly environment for businesses in the state. Some of us who have small businesses are finding it difficult because patronage has been somehow poor in recent weeks. So, I am praying for a leader who will listen to us, help us grow our businesses and help stop the menace of touts who always come to disturb and task us to pay all sorts of dues.

Chibuzor Kenjika, 31, Truck Driver, Lagos

I am looking forward to electing a new governor who can help us clear the dirt on the streets of Lagos. Also, one who will stop the continuous disturbance of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) and officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management (LASTMA). Lagos State deserves a cool-headed and focused leader.

Halima Mala Alamai, 37, Civil Servant, Kaduna

I will vote for the candidate who will do the right thing and one who will demonstrate quality leadership. There are some obvious reasons and you need not look too hard because of antecedents. So, my candidate is one of the best choices for the governorship position. He is extremely intelligent, committed to doing the right thing and is determined, bold and courageous. He doesn’t care about the consequences so long as he does the right thing. That is what we expect of a leader, especially in such a complex society.
