The 2012 recipient of The Caine Prize for African Writing describes Rulfo’s use of language as “simple” and “on the surface,” and yet amazingly plumbs great imaginative depths, adding that the work has been praised as one of the finest novels ever written by respected writers such as Tahar Ben Jelloun, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Octavio Paz.
