Since the return of democracy in 1999, Senator Ahmad Lawan has been in the National Assembly for close to 17 years now – first as a House of Representatives member from 1999 to 2007, and as senator since then.
We, the people of his constituency (Yobe North), find it unbelievable that there is virtually nothing tangible to show for Lawan’s long stay in the National Assembly. This is in spite of the fact that he held the position of the chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Accounts.
There is no constituency project he has taken to the people of his zone where he was elected to go to the upper chamber. He is hardly seen in the community, while most of the promises he made have largely remained unfulfilled.
Anytime he wants to see the youths, who have been toiling for him during campaign period, he will summon them to Kano, dole out some cash to them and head back to Abuja. To make it worse, he has no relationship with the community leaders and hardly consults them on anything.
All he is interested in, it seems, is to have the political party leaders on his side, so that his political ambition will not suffer any setback.
When he vied for the position of Senate President, very few people were supportive because they know it will not in any way have a positive impact on their well-being.
He also harbours the ambition of becoming the governor of Yobe State, but if we look at his background it will become clear that he does not deserve that seat. A governor should be someone who is selfless and with the interest of the people at heart.
We cannot support his governorship ambition because we don’t want to be taken for a terrible ride. It is our prayer that the Almighty Allah will give us a governor that is competent, selfless ad committed to our well-being and that of our state.
