The production brought to a climax all the activities that had been planned for the 75th birthday celebration of the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

It was a good outing for the Jos-based theatre outfit as all the performances of the play were well attended by a quality crowd comprising theatre enthusiasts, children and the diplomatic community.

The play The Lion and the jewel is a classic of the Nigerian theatre and it is the story of the contest of wits by the old, traditional Baroka (Degri Emmanuel) and the new, modern Lakunle (Obe Newton) for the hand of the village belle, Sidi (Eucharia Egah). The Lion, Baroka, eventually triumphs to the delight of the villagers.

The successful outcome of the production was a collaboration between the Jos Repertory Theatre and the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), the Abuja Readers Club and the Abuja Literary Society (ALS), which groups also had their individual programmes for the Nobel Laureate.

The Jos Repertory Theatre is coming back to Abuja in October with the Spanish play, FUENTEOVEJUNA which was written by Lope de Vega.
