As against the falsehood of political detractors, President of Nigerian 8th Senate, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has achieved more than any of his predecessors in office.
Since the 8th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 9, 2015 the 8th Senate is the most productive since 1999. It has surpassed the 5th Senate which with 129 bills in four years had the highest number of bills, as against the 6th Senate with 72 bills, and 128 passed by the 7th Senate. The number of petitions we have successfully treated to the satisfaction of Nigerians who filed them dwarfed those treated by the sixth and seventh Senate respectively.
The 8th Senate, under Saraki, worked to grow the economy, passing bills like: the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Bill; the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill; the Witness Protection Bill; the Whistleblower Protection Bill and the Federal Audit Service Commission Bill ”to support the fight against corruption. The National Assembly quickly rose to the occasion to prevent the expulsion of Nigeria from the Global community on the exchange of financial intelligence by expediting the passage of the NFIU bill.
Under the distinguished leadership of Abubakar Bukola Saraki as Senate President, the Senate, at various times, engaged with security agencies to ensure that requisite laws and funds needed to ensure the safety of lives and property in the country are put in place. Even now, he continues to place the nation’s interest high above his or party’s.
Saraki has a long history of patriotism and service to the people. His reign as governor of Kwara state brought unmatched feats and gains to the people. Some of the many achievements are Kwara State University (KWASU) which he established and has not only become the pride of Kwarans but to the nation at large, the University all the past governments (military or democratically elected) could not establish for one of the firstly created states like Kwara. Ilorin International Aviation School; the rehabilitation of Ilorin Airport to international standard and construction of Ilorin Cargo Terminal.
The road from Kwara Police Command A Division to Offa Garage and many other roads were made dual carriage roads and rehabilitated during his first tenure and that of Offa Garage was extended to Ganmo town at the tail end of his second tenure; Sponsored the Kwara Child Rights Act; Every Child Counts programme where many children’s oriented policies were initiated; Voluntary Teaching Services; Kwara Stadium Modernisation, Expansion and Internationalization; Kwara Football Academy (KFA).
Established his own football team, Abubakar Bukola Saraki Football Club (ABS FC) which together with its twin team, Kwara United was always among the top clubs in the Nigeria Premier League; Ensured the maintenance of peace, creating an enabling environment for growth and development, enabling haven for several private sector industrialists to promote socio-economic growth of the state; The various estates (Mandate I, II and III, Harmony Estate, Irewolede Phase II, Mandate Estate Omun-Aran etc); Modern Market along Western Reservoir Road, Ilorin.
Youths’ involvement in the leadership of the state; Rehabilitation and Modernization of Kwara Office Complexes housing many Ministries in the year 2009 to boost the morale of Civil Servants and enhance productivities; The creation of office of Youths Empowerment Coordinators (YEC); whilst Tourism, Environmental, Women Affairs and other ministries had it big during his tenure.
