What brought the Grand Cherokee craze in the mid-1990s? Does the new grand Cherokee still have thrilling charm it had or does it have a lot to compete against?
We met those who once had a Grand Cherokees to find out what they liked about the new Grand Cherokee. We caught up with Hanson Ema last week.
Ema told us, “I love the car for the grunt which it had up hill. Back in 1993, mine had a screen which would tell me everything I needed know to make my journey cool. The gismo is rarely seen even in my previous Range Rover. I guess most of today’s 4×4 borrowed this same technology.
“I love the new wide-open view on the roof. It gives command view dual-pane panoramic sunroof. It offers twice as much surface compared to the standard.”
The Grand Cherokee comes in both V6 and V8 power train that have enough grunt measuring from 340- 500nm of torque that pulls this jeep on quickly from a stand still which Ema says he still expects from the Grand Cherokee.
In 2009, Chrysler announced a US$1.8 billion, 285,000 square feet (26,477 m2) expansion of its Jefferson North Assembly plant to allow flexible manufacture of the next-generation model, as well as the 2011+ Dodge Durango off the same platform that was developed jointly with Mercedes ML Chassis.
The difference against an ML is, it is lighter and is fitted with none Mercedes package such as gearbox, petrol engines and suspensions. However the Grand Cherokee is still full of feature which persons like Ema would enjoy using.
For instance Ema still loves Overland trim that comes with the handsome chrome grills that give it the elegant look and its sophisticated interior with down-to-earth ambience. He adds, “There’s lot of leather work compared to the lot in the market.”
According to Ema the Grand Cherokee’s looks are more persuasive than imposing unlike the Range Rover Sports.” The Jeep Grand Cherokee’s makeover included some sharp-looking exterior changes. I’m probably in the minority but I think it looks too pretty for pools of mud. With looks like the Grand Cherokee’s, it’s just as suitable for the valet lane as the passing lane heading up a mountain.
For reviews the Grand Cherokee has standard rear-wheel drive, active head restraints for the front row, four-wheel-disc antilock brakes, an electronic stability system with anti-roll control and traction control, a backup camera with rear parking sensors, and six airbags, including side curtains for both rows. The Grand Cherokee also offers optional features such as four-wheel drive, front parking sensors, a blind spot warning system, a rear cross-path detection system and collision alert which many should find useful.
Will it turn heads? Definitely! It is better than others we don’t know but it will make you stand out especially with the SRT-8 model – just like the one we spotted from WestStar Nigeria Limited. Moreover the v8 growl will draw attention even better than the others. With the shared engineering it will still be fun to drive.
