He criticised the governments of Babangida and Abacha, both military regimes. His criticisms of Jonathan’s administration should not be carelessly disregarded on the basis of his moral or political probity; especially when all he has pointed out are nothing but the truth about Dr Jonathan’s style of leadership.
I don’t see wisdom in those who instead to agree or disagree with the prevailing situations that have been mentioned by Obasanjo, which constitute imminent danger to the existence of Nigeria as a united entity, they go about challenging his political and moral credentials.
Noteworthy is the fact that Obasanjo’s letter was written on 2nd December, that was a day after Dr Ibrahim Datti, the Secretary General of Sharia Council of Nigeria, had issued a press statement accusing the government of Jonathan of complacency in the killings of Muslims in Nigeria under the guise of war against Boko Haram. Also consider the fact that in his letter, Obasanjo accused Jonathan of secretly training snipers in the country.
What the former president has done, regardless of what others feel or think about his motives, must be termed an act of courage. Even though he did more than this in the past when he criticised some military regimes particularly Abacha’s government which he had paid the price for with a jail term.
Most recently, the former president of US, George Bush said that if Nigerians cannot hold their leaders accountable, then they should forget about sustainable development.
It is interesting as the events unfold gradually and have just begun to educate and inform us more. Who knows whether the next revelation would ignite a befitting peaceful revolution that would shake-off the shackle of misrule around the necks of Nigerians?
