Quick response (QR) codes have been around for years. Most people recognize them as shortcuts to websites, discounts, or social media pages. They’ve been useful tools for marketing campaigns and basic scan analytics.

However, something more practical has started to take shape: QR code traceability.

Instead of just showing a link or tracking clicks, QR codes now help trace a product’s full path, from manufacturing and warehousing to logistics and even retail checkout. 

This shift has changed how QR codes are being used, especially in industries that depend on tracking and transparency.

To support this growing need, a new format was introduced: the GS1 Digital Link QR code or QR code powered by GS1. Unlike ordinary QR codes, this one is created specifically for supply chain processes. It connects the code directly to standardized product data, not just a webpage.

So how did we get from simple marketing scans to full-scale traceability?

What Are QR Codes?

A QR code looks like a pixelated square made of black and white blocks. It’s a type of 2D barcode that can store far more information than the traditional 1D barcodes you see on grocery items.

Yes, a QR code is a type of barcode. Many people think they are separate, but “barcode” is a general term.

It was first developed to help track car parts in manufacturing. Now it’s everywhere — linking to websites, launching app downloads, handling digital payments, and more.

There are two main types you’ll hear about:

  • Static QR codes: These hold fixed information. Whatever link or message they contain is locked in and cannot be changed.

  • Dynamic QR codes: These don’t store the final destination. They point to a redirect URL, which can be changed later. That small difference is what makes dynamic codes trackable.

Which brings us to the next question…

Are QR Code Scans Traceable?

Only dynamic QR codes are traceable. Static ones simply don’t have that function.

Why? Because traceability isn’t built into the visual code itself. It comes from what happens after the scan. In dynamic codes, the scan goes through a redirect system, usually a hosted server, where scan activity is recorded.

So what kind of data gets tracked?

  • Date and time of scan

  • Type of device (e.g. Android or iPhone)

  • General location (based on IP) or GPS (which requires users’ permission to get, as per GDPR guidelines)

  • Number of total scans

This kind of tracking is often used in marketing. However, we need something more structured and standardized for product traceability, especially in supply chains.

What Is a GS1 Digital Link QR Code?

A GS1 Digital Link QR code encodes product identifiers like GTINs, batch or lot numbers, and serial numbers directly into the URL in a structured, standardized format. 

That means every scan isn’t just accessing a web link. It’s carrying real, machine-readable data that systems in the supply chain can recognize and use.

The data inside can be scanned at various points, such as during delivery, warehouse entry, or retail checkout, just like the “zebra” barcodes used on packaging today.

The difference is that it’s readable by both barcode scanners and smartphones and can connect to richer product information online when needed.

 

This format enables QR code traceability at an operational level.

GS1 Digital Link QR Code Traceability 

QR code traceability depends on more than just the pattern printed on the label. It’s shaped by how the code is set up and what it connects to behind the scenes.

Let’s break down the core difference:

✅ Standard dynamic QR codes
These are built mainly for web redirection and scan analytics. You scan, it passes through a redirect server, and that server logs the activity — time, device, location. It’s commonly used in marketing.

 

✅ GS1 Digital Link QR codes
These are designed for product identification based on global standards like GTIN, serial number, or batch code. But they also support tracking and they do it in two different ways:

1. Resolver-based tracking (similar to dynamic QR codes)

When the Digital Link URL is hosted on a resolver platform, like one managed by GS1, a brand’s own system, or a third-party provider, scan activity can be logged.
You can track:

  • Time of scan

  • Device type

  • Browser

  • IP-based or GPS location

This works much like standard dynamic QR tracking.

2. Retail and supply chain scanning (same as 1D barcodes)

QR codes powered by GS1 can be scanned by point-of-sale systems or ERP software, just like traditional 1D barcodes. Barcode scanners extract the GTIN or serial data directly from the code. No internet required.

This is possible because the Digital Link format encodes structured product data, not just a basic web URL. It works in real-world retail and logistics environments, where fast, reliable scanning is needed without depending on a live web connection.

⚠️ Standard dynamic QR codes typically can’t support this second type of tracking. They don’t follow GS1’s structured format by default. While it’s technically possible to manually include product identifiers in the URL, you’d need to apply the correct GS1 Digital Link syntax without proper validation.

Why Effective Product Traceability Is Essential

For many businesses, traceability is a critical part of operations, and in some cases, a legal requirement.

Here’s why it matters:

  • Product recalls become faster and more targeted
    With batch or serial-level data encoded in a QR code, affected products can be traced and removed quickly, without pulling unrelated stock.

  • Helps detect and manage gray market activity
    When products show up in places they shouldn’t, traceable identifiers help brands confirm where the item was shipped and where it ended up.

  • Builds consumer trust
    Shoppers want to know what they’re buying. A scannable code that proves authenticity, origin, or safety gives confidence, especially in categories like food, supplements, or electronics. 

Example: Using a GS1 QR code for farm-to-table products, farmers can encode batch-level data that links the product to its origin, processing history, and distribution path.

  • Supports regulatory compliance
    In industries like food, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, traceability is a requirement, not a choice. GS1-based QR codes help meet these legal obligations by following a standardized format recognized across supply chains. 

A good example is the Digital Product Passport (DPP) under the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, which will require structured product data to be easily accessible and traceable.

In short, QR code traceability reduces risk, protects the brand, and adds value, all from a small square on a label.

QR codes have evolved from simple marketing tools to robust traceability solutions, bridging the gap between brands, supply chains, and consumers. With QR code powered by GS1, every scan tells where a product came from, how it traveled, and even whether it’s authentic.
