This can be achieved by establishing a new system of governance that will truly symbolize the state is what the masses deserve. It should initiate a broad range of swift and sweeping reforms – in the political, education, health, agriculture, social, legal, land reforms, economic, civil service and cultural spheres in the state.
Tambuwal’s political skills and exposure are sound, having been a former Deputy Chief Whip and Speaker of House of Reps. Now that a new government is expected to be pieced together, Nigerians will be eager to see who he is and what he has to offer. As governor, he will lead a state that needs human development, especially education, job creation and agricultural development. The state deserves a leadership that will transform its natural resources and potentials into reality, utilize and channel resources to the sectors that will profit the masses, not white elephant projects.
Sokoto has waited too long for leaders who know that quid pro quo should not be the status quo. The easiest way to give good governance is if you can run a clean, focused, accountable and transparent government. With this we can overturn deficits into surpluses, reduce state debts, increase assets and reserves. It’s high time we moved forward to an intelligent and productive state, one that educates and nurtures talent; one that practices integrity, justice and people-centric policies.
Complicating matters for Tambuwal will be the countless phone calls, lobbying, e-mails and texts from campaign supporters and those looking for appointment or favour. That’s the easy part. What to do with those who spent the past years but now scramble to cover their tracks. They, too, now want to be “in” with the new administration. But be warned: The short-term rentals, new best friends and sycophants will return to form at some point over the next four years. And never forget that even deep pockets of goodwill are more short-lived in this epoch of social media.
Finally, Tambuwal’s true victory will be when the state is back on track. He shouldn’t forget that professional politicians, cabals and godfathers are on standby to find their way into the new administration. Under his leadership, what the masses deserve are sound, effective, reliable and affordable agricultural, health, education, job creation and infrastructural development policies. May Allah guide, protect and give him the zeal to lead to the expectations of the masses.
