A commercial cyclist identified only as Abubakar has lost his motorcycle after he was drugged by some suspected motorcycle thieves in Abaji.

A witness said the incident happened last Friday at about 1:26p.m. when the victim carried two passengers on his bike to a river in the area.

He said the cyclist conveyed the two young men who pretended that their vehicle had broken down near the bridge that crossed the river and that they gave him a laced soft drink. 

“When the cyclist drank the mineral, he slept off and they escaped with the motorcycle,” he said.

He said some passersby who saw the cyclist lying by the road alerted the chairman of the motorcycle union, who rushed to the scene and reported the incident to the police.

The chairman of the motorcycle transport union in the area, Isa Zakari, confirmed the incident, saying the victim was drugged after he was given a bottle of soft drink by the suspected motorcycle thieves.

He said the union had already reported the matter to the police in the area.

When contacted, the Abaji Divisional Police Officer (DPO), David Kolo, said he was in a meeting and that the reporter should call back.

He later said he had not been officially briefed on the incident.
