They are the list of things not friendly to fertility, and experts could add even more.
Excess alcohol intake, coffee, smoking, low sperm count, infection and even the appendix are leading causes of infertility among couples in Nigeria, according to Dr. Abayomi Ajayi, medical director of Nordica Fertility Centre, which has delivered over 2,000 babies through assisted reproductive technology since 2003.
“We did a study in Lagos which showed that within a space of 10 years, the sperm characteristic of people who showed up at NORDICA was 30 per cent lower than the ones 10 years before.”
Marijuana and steroids like sex-enhancement drugs that come with dangerous lifestyles push down sperm count, he said in an interview.
Ajayi said long-distance truck drivers and okada operators are particularly prone to infertility, adding that, “A study in France revealed that persons who work in fuel stations over a long period of time will experience infertility because the fume that comes from the fuel causes reduced sperm counts.”
Infertility attributed to both males and females (including endometriosis and blocked tubes) is growing, reproductive health experts say.
“If one has a ruptured appendix, it’s like asking for trouble because the appendix and the tubes are like neighbours and if you don’t treat it on time, it could actually affect the tubes,” said Ajayi.
He suggests that men can run scans on their testes to check for early signs of cancer which reduce the testes’ ability to produce quality sperm.
