On Sunday evening, President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to after massive pressure at home and abroad speak to Nigerians on the missing girls from Chibok. The media chat which has since been characterized by unfortunate blunder and clear exhibition of the very level of the persons who call the shots on our behalf in this country.
Two issues among many others came out strong. One, the president typical of his un convincing nature assured the country and the world that the girls would be released but he never said how and when. Two, the president again came hard in defense of the terrorist in the creeks and said they are not terrorist. Meaning they are freedom fighters.
The worst of all the calamities came when Patience, President Jonathan’s wife called the meeting of state governors’ wives including the principal and some staff of the Chibok girls schools and on national television reduced a very important  global issue into a mere comedy show where she cried and pronounced that the Governor of Borno State KashimShettima should be held responsible for the missing girls.
I know for one, Patience is not well educated but the privilege of being the wife of the president presupposes that she has retinue of aides who are suppose to bring her to standards. This does not seem to be happening as the crudity still persists.
How can you blame a governor who does not command even a boys scout platoon to be responsible for abduction of young girls in a state under emergency rule and where colossal national and state resources are spend on a daily basis? Something is definitely missing I think those in the corridors of power that are so blinded by the ecstasies and perquisites of office are either confused or dead out of tune with the realities of modern governance.
Let me go back to President Jonathan’s assertion that the girls would be found. The president may simply be hiding under the auspices of intelligence to issue a statement that may not be the reality. What the world especially the international community that people like the president are so scared of have since dismissed President Jonathan’s claims as flat and without any serious consequences.
The painful part of the Chibok tragedy is that here is a government that has exclusive responsibility over security matters going about its business apparently unperturbed when the nation is under very serious threats and emergency. Nobody cares but the parents, peoples of the various communities and some concerned Nigerians.
President Jonathan and his government are careless about our welfare and I dare say even the Presidential chat was at the instance of the growing international outrage about the care free attitude displayed by this government. It was more of a liability than asset in view of the colossal scandal and failure to provide answers to simple questions raised by Mr President.
Again the interview did display in very clear terms the gap between those at the highest level of authority and grasp with the objective realities of the people of Nigeria. I have never seen a government that claims the mandate of the majority of citizens descend so low reacting to simple criticisms from the populace in such  veracious manner and claim that it is because its leader is a minority. What a failure, what a thinking!
Let me restate here that regardless of where anyone comes from and his historical antecedence, the fact is that the word competence remains neutral. It does not depend of creed, faith or any other issue. It is simply a matter of capacity and ones it is there it is there and if it is lacking, it is lacking. The tragedy in our case is that it is lacking and could be remedied but our leaders are hiding under the toga of unfortunate ignorance to continue to drag us down the path of destruction. We are really in trouble.
Secondly, the issue of Niger Delta militancy and the desperate attempt by the president at every opportunity to exculpate them. He has argued continuously that they are not terrorists. He even said so at the parley. Okay, if they are not terrorists, what are they? Freedom fighters I guess. You can see how petit and dangerous men on top of our political and economic echelons are in this country.
When the first bombs were dropped around Eagle Square in Abuja at a time Nigeria was celebrating its fifty years of independence, the claim to that terror was made by MEND, Niger Delta terrorist outfit, but the president was the first to come up with disclaimers saying that his people are not responsible against the claim made by the group and the subsequent statements credited to Henry Okah, leader of the group who said that several people including President Jonathan had asked him to rescind and lay the blame on what they call the North. This statement was treated with kid gloves by Nigerians especially and since then, things have never been the same again in this country and we are keeping quite. Those who need to confront such a biased statement of the president and similar others along that line are keeping quite in the name of respect for constituted authority.
On Monday this week, Patience Jonathan congregated wives of state Governors and cried. Exhibited her distances and possibly that of her husband whom we all elected as president away from the real issues and what Nigerians see as matters on front burners. That comedy show was a show of shame and I am surprise that those who handle the presidency are not seeing the errors and dangers of this circus show.
Nigeria for God sake is not a local government in Bayelsa State it is a country of over a hundred and seventy million people, thirty six states and over seven hundred local authorities. What we get form our ogas at the top is unfortunate but that is what we deserve because that is what we voluntarily and with blood walked into.
