In his long and rewarding career, Joe has worked as a broadcaster, a public servant and an administrator. After his studies in the United States, he worked with the Nigerian Television Authority, Makurdi, as a Reporter, Editor and Current Affairs producer and rose to become the controller news and current affairs, before he left to become Director of Press to the Government of Cross Rivers State. In 1992, he became General Manager of the Cross River Broadcasting Service. Joe also held top government positions in the state before he joined the Federal Civil Service in 2001. He has worked in the Federal Ministries of Energy and Water Resources. He was Director, Civil Service Pensions, Director of Administration and finance, Public Service Institute, and Director of Planning, Research and IT in the office of the Accountant General from where he retired last month.

Joe is well travelled and is a keen tennis player. He is married with children.

I met Joe Oru many years ago when he just returned from the United States and had started working in Makurdi. As a senior colleague at NTA Makurdi, he was very professional but he was also warm, fair and just. Within a very short time, Joe became my adopted brother and has remained so ever since. As he turned sixty, and retired from the Federal Civil Service, I know that the nation certainly has not finished with Joe, whose vast experience and excellence in the public service and broadcasting are a valuable resource.
