“Thou shall not kill, and whoever kills in cold blood deserves death as his or her own reward or punishment” Justice has been served; Maryam Sanda has reaped what she sowed. And no amount of wailing can reverse the judgment. Blackmail and other baseless arguments against capital punishment would not save her neck. A homicidal murderer does not deserve our pity; otherwise our society would become a jungle, and a killing field. The Judge, Justice Yusuf Halilu, has delivered a historic judgment regardless of propaganda and other innuendos to subvert the course of justice. That is what we had anticipated; that at least, Maryam Sanda deserved to be hanged or stabbed to death as she did to her husband. Even though she has the right to appeal the judgment up to the Supreme Court, we don’t expect or even hope that she would get away with her crime. Let all kinds of murderers – husband killers, wife-killers, ritualists and any lunatic killer understand that once you take away someone’s life, you automatically forfeit your own life. Your freedom to live stops once you commit murder. I am sure, death sentence and other measures would help to curb the rampant cases of homicide in Nigeria.
