Women in Kano state have staged about 3 kilometre distance walk as part of this year’s World Women’s Day celebration and also to show their concerns on the plight of rape victims in the state.
The walk session jointly organized by coalition of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Gender Coalition for Access to Justice (GCAJ) and the state ministry for women affairs was part of series of activities scheduled to mark the day.
During the walk from the state secretariat to the state racecourse fields; women were seen wearing yellow attires and carrying placards with different messages including the agitations for a death penalty to rapists.
The session ended with speeches delivered by different stakeholders addressing the women gathering.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Barrister Zubaida Abubakar Damakka stated that rape had been a very serious issue and that in trying to address the issue women associations had succeeded in securing amendment on the penalty mated for culprits to 14 years imprisonment and a fine of N200, 000 as the minimum punishment and maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
According to the commissioner, women would want to see that the maximum punishment is amended to death penalty.
Similarly, the state chairperson of Gender Coalition for Access to Justice (GCAJ) Hajiya Hadiza Bala Fagge stated that there was a need for the public to strengthen its commitment to its social and economic responsibilities in ensuring that such social vices were averted.
