Three men, who have been in prison custody since July 4 for allegedly raping a married woman, have been granted bail in the sum of N500,000 each by the Magistrate Court 1, in Enugu.

The accused persons, who hail from Obeagu Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State, are Chukwuebuka Ugwo, Onyekachukwu Eze and Chimezie Ogbodo.

It was gathered that the accused persons, on July 4, in the afternoon went to Mr. Friday Ani’s compound and forcefully had carnal knowledge of his wife, Ogechi Ani, a mother of three in the company of nine others.

Magistrate  Alex Amalu, gave them bail in the sum of N500,000 each and one surety in the sum of N1.5 million who must be a civil servant not below GL15 in the Enugu State Civil Service or a community leader with a current tax clearance or a built up property with a C of O within the court jurisdiction.

Both the surety and each of the accused persons are expected to deposit two full size photographs with the court while the surety shall be recommended by the defence counsel in addition to deposing affidavit of means.

Magistrate Amalu held that he was granting the bail on the premise that they will go and reconcile with the Ani family so that the matter, which was adjourned till October 10, would be trashed out.

The defence counsel, Barr. Jerry Eneh, had pleaded with the court that his clients be taken on bail to go and make peace with the aggrieved family.

Magistrate Amalu admonished the accused to go with their parents and notable men in their community and pacify the family not to pursue the matter in court.
