The Super Eagles of Nigeria face South Africa in a much-awaited AFCON 2023 semi-final clash on Wednesday. It is a match between two nations that have become used to playing each other, although the South Africans have only won once. The latest face-off is taking place on the biggest stage yet, and I examine how the Super Eagles can match into the final of the tournament.

MAINTAIN A SOLID DEFENCE

Nigeria’s journey in the tournament has been marked by astute defending, conceding just one goal thus far. Led by the solid trio of William Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey, the Super Eagles’ defense has been virtually impenetrable. South Africa, on the other hand, have scored in only two of five AFCON matches played so far.

Although they penetrated the defence of previous favourites Morocco, the Super Eagles are different opposition entirely with four consecutive clean sheets. With goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s exceptional performances, the Nigerian backline can be the bedrock to victory in La Paix stadium on Wednesday.

CONTROLLING MIDFIELD

Midfield control remains a concern for the Super Eagles. The team is light of midfielder, lining up with two central midfielders while the wing back become inverted midfielders in Jose Peseiro’s new 3-4-3 system. The duo of Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi have had a tough time dictating play, with Onyeka chasing opposition everywhere while Iwobi plays the simple passes. However, the South Africans populate their midfield and the numerical advantage could expose the Super Eagles’ defence to more shots. Jose Peseiro and his boys might have to tweak strategy to limit South Africa’s unpredictability especially from long range.

WINING IN REGULATION TIME

Victor Osimhen’s presence looms large, his disruptive playing style and physicality posing constant threats to opposing defenders. He has been involved in everything positive for Nigeria’s attack at AFCON but lacking the goals. Against South Africa, he should lead Lookman and co. to ensure the match is won in regulation time. Rohwen Williams has also kept four consecutive clean sheets and saved four penalties against Cape Verde in the quarter-finals. This is a psychological advantage for the Bafana Bafana to push the match to penalties if Nigeria fails to score soon enough. The frontline, led by Osimhen, must ensure this does not happen.
