A thrift collector, simply identified as Ada, in Kubwa, a satellite town in Bwari Area Council of the FCT, has been given until the end of October to produce contributions running into millions of naira.

In a chat with City & Crime on Thursday, one of the contributors, Mrs Ikechukwu Ngozi, a petty trader at the Kubwa village market, said she never wanted to join the scheme, but that, “Saving through it is more efficient for me than the banks.”

She said she was supposed to get her contribution at the end of September, but that the collector “came up with an excuse. So we will take legal action against her by the end of this month if she does not provide our money.”

Another contributor, Mr Tunde Ogunleye, corroborated Ngozi’s statement that the collector was supposed to disburse cash to her clients at the end of last month.

He said, “I had budgeted the money. I need to pay my children’s school fees and my house rent which expired in September.”

But in a telephone conversation with our reporter, Ada said, “Trust is an important thing in this business. I have been able to prove myself as reliable and credible, that’s why my customers feel safe keeping their money with me. It’s just so unfortunate that my boy who plays football had an injury in August, and I used the money for his surgery hoping that before the end of September I would get it back.”

She added that she would ensure she settled her clients before the deadline elapsed.
