Steve Gukas’ movie on the Ebola menace in Nigeria, ’93 Days,’ is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month.
The movie is a narrative on Nigeria’s 93-day experience battling the disease when Liberia’s Patrick Sawyer came into the country carrying the virus, the lives lost like that of Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh and Nigeria’s victory over the scourge.
It recounts the heroic roles played by the doctors at the First Consultant Hospital, the Nigerian Government and the World Health Organisation in saving the country from a major epidemic which was eradicated after 93 days it was imported into the country.
Gukas, director of the movie told Weekend Magazine that he has always wanted to get a film into TIFF.
He said: “So I am over the moon. Really chuffed we got in. I think it is an apt platform for the world premiere of ‘93 Days’ – a great opportunity to share this fantastic story of human sacrifice, resilience and the rise of the best of human values at a time of great threat to mankind. I am looking forward to presenting to the world, Nigeria at its finest hour.”
Dotun Olakunri, another producer of the movie which premieres in Nigeria in September, said it is a film all Nigerians should be proud of and support because it tells a story that is a major milestone in the country’s history.
The cast of the movie include Danny Glover, Bimbo Akintola, Tim Reid, Somkele Iyamah Idhalama, Alastair Mackenzie, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey, Bimbo Manuel, Charles Okafor, Gideon Okeke, Adebola and Williams among others.
Also, ‘The Arbitration,’ directed by Niyi Akinmolayan has been announced as an official selection of the City-to-City program of the Festival.
The movie which features OC Ukeje, Adesua Etomi, Iretiola Doyle, Sola Fosudo and Somkele Iyamah already opened in cinemas across Nigeria on August 12, 2016 and was the number two movie in most sites across the country behind Hollywood heavyweight – ‘Suicide Squad’ but ahead of ‘The Legend of Tarzan.’
Ukeje and Iyamah have both been selected as TIFF Rising Stars.
