Nigerians are amazed that our security outfits did not try hard enough to sniff out Umar Faruk Muttalab despite his father informing the authorities. Someone should tell me when has our intelligence services ever nip a crisis in the bud in Nigeria. You hear and see crisis whether religious, student or otherwise brewing for days or months that the man on the street knows will get ugly and they do nothing till such result in loss of lives and properties before they start quelling it. Security and policing is a 24 hours job on the streets, not wearing big gowns, driving around in luxury cars with tinted glass and staying in air-conditioned offices and speaking big grammar like “we will arrest the situation” or “we are on top of the matter”. Our intelligence personnel need to get off their high horses and start hanging around churches, mosques, schools, market and be taxi drivers or conductors and be at rallies, demonstrations and dress like mad men and mingle with street urchins. Let them learn from M15, CIA and the like. May Allah give us good people that will protect our great country.
