Timely organ harvest saves 23 patients

The hospital said the surgeries could only hold after families of the deceased persons gave permission for an organ harvest on May 4.
It said the marathon 10 surgeries a day could go down as the most number of organs harvested in a day.
A team of 100 doctors working simultaneously out of seven theatres did all 23 organ harvest and 10 transplants at the same time.
In a statement released after the harvest and transplants, the hospital said, “A case of extreme gesture of kindness displayed by five strong families who came forward to donate the organs of their loved ones, incidentally on the same evening, enabled this feat to give a fresh lease of life to 23 people.”
At a function days later to thank the five bereaved families, Apollo founder and chairman, Dr Prathap Reddy said, “These well-meaning families have helped give people in end-stage organ failure, a second chance to live – and in the act will inspire more people to donate organs.”
“It takes an extreme sense of human kindness and an elevated sense of social responsibility from families to help hospitals and doctors  give a fresh lease of life to those in need. Human life is priceless, and when an individual’s life can give life and hope to so many others in need, it is truly priceless!” Dr Reddy added.
