The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, on Monday said the nation’s premier seaports, the Apapa and Tin-Can Island Ports need immediate rehabilitation to ensure that they perform optimally.

The Minister made this disclosure after a guided tour of the Apapa and Tin-Can Island ports, in Lagos

Oyetola was led by the managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mohammed Bello-Koko.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the tour, the minister said to forestall the collapse of the port infrastructure there require immediate rehabilitation.

To make it workable, the minister called on terminal operators to collaborate with the federal government to hasten up the rehabilitation process.

“Infrastructure is almost collapsing with what I have seen so far and it’s a major rehabilitation that has to be carried out and the dredging has to continue.

“I am impressed with the management of the authority, we need to support them and I am looking forward to a situation where the terminal managers will be willing to contribute to the rehabilitation of the ports. It’s important and if they do that, they will make more money for themselves, it should be a collaboration with the terminal and the government.”

The minister also stated that he would engage with the Ministry of Works on the rehabilitation of the port access roads.
