President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, is both a celebration and continuation of Nigeria’s excellence in sports.

The President who was represented by the Vice-President Kashim Shetimma, said this on Sunday, May 18, while declaring open the delayed 2024 NSF at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

President Tinubu said sports in Nigeria is not only an event but a culture and a tool for national integration.

“sports is more than a contest of physical strength. It is the soul of our togetherness. A mirror that reflects the possibilities of a truly united nation.

“That is why here in Nigeria, we have made sports a culture, not only as an event but as a way of life.  Sports for us is a tool for national integration, a rallying ground for patriotism and a workshop for shaping not just the body but the mind and spirit of our people.

“For decades sports has placed Nigeria on the global map. We have produced champions from medal winning Olympians, to world renowned footballers, from heavyweight champions in boxing to stars on tracks and fields.

“It is on this heritage that we stand today. The 2022 National Sports Festival is both a celebration and a continuation of that sporting excellence.”

The president also said even as the festival is taking place in Ogun State, its impact is felt across the country.

“This festival is not just about competition but a tribute- a tribute to our unrelenting commitment to preserving this spirit of sportsmanship. The games may be hosted here in Ogun State but its excitement vibrates across the federation.

“It is a proof that sports remains one of the powerful forces for national cohesion. Sports tells us what every constitutions tries to say- that we are one people united in purpose and bound by destiny.”

Meanwhile, the governor of the host state, Dapo Abiodun, commended the organising committee for putting together the breath-taking opening ceremony.

He also said: “The Gateway is more than a competition. It is a platform for national integration and youth elevation.”

Following yesterday’s opening ceremony, which witnessed performances from leading Nigerian artists, Davido and Asa, the 22nd NSF will now commence in earnest with athletes from 36 states and the FCT competing for laurels in 33 sporting events from May 16-30.
