President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 1,000 youths from Plateau State to serve as forest guards, part of efforts to tackle the state’s long-standing insecurity.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the development on Tuesday during a reception for Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who was recently welcomed into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Shettima said the initiative aims to strengthen security, particularly in rural areas that have borne the brunt of violent conflicts between farmers and herders.

Plateau has endured insecurity for over two decades, with reports indicating that more than 11,000 people have been killed during clashes in rural communities.

Shettima noted that the recruitment of forest guards is among several measures by the Tinubu administration to restore peace and deliver the dividends of democracy to the state.

“The president has authorised the recruitment of 1,000 youths as forest guards on the Plateau. The dividends of democracy will begin to manifest in the next three weeks,” he said, urging residents to support federal efforts and promising further development projects.

Shettima also announced that contractors would soon be mobilised for the construction of the Akwanga–Jos Road, describing the route as critical to the economic and social life of Plateau residents.

Additionally, he revealed that Plateau State will host the flag-off of the federal government’s livestock development project, describing these interventions as the beginning of broader initiatives to promote peace, security, and economic growth in the state.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg. More positive developments will continue to come to Plateau State,” Shettima said, highlighting the administration’s commitment to addressing insecurity and supporting rural communities.
