Tinubu arrives in Japan for TICAD9 summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, to join other African leaders, international development partners, and stakeholders at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9).

The summit, scheduled for August 20–22 at the Pacifico Yokohama, is a triennial event initiated by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. It alternates between Japan and Africa, with Tunisia serving as the last host in 2022.

Tinubu’s aircraft touched down at Haneda International Airport, Tokyo, at 12:50 a.m. local time on Tuesday, where he was received at the Presidential Wing by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Ambassador in charge of Haneda Airport for TICAD, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and senior officials of the Nigerian Embassy.

With the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” TICAD9 will focus on driving Africa’s economic transformation, improving business environments and institutions, and promoting private investment and innovation. It also seeks to strengthen human security, peace, and stability while advancing a more resilient and sustainable African society.

During the conference, President Tinubu is expected to hold bilateral meetings and participate in strategic engagements with the chief executives of Japanese companies with existing and prospective investments in Nigeria.

President Tinubu departed Abuja on Friday, August 15, making a brief stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before heading to Japan. According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President will proceed from TICAD9 to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from Sunday, August 24, to Monday, August 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

While in Brazil, Tinubu will hold bilateral talks with his host, attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, and lead a delegation of key ministers and senior officials to explore new areas of cooperation, as well as sign agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Brazilian government.
