President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday requested the National Assembly to approve the sum of N1.481 trillion as the 2025 budget for Rivers State.
Tinubu, in a letter read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, explained that his request followed the nullification of the 2025 budget of the state by the Supreme Court and the fact that the state was under emergency rule.
President Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months.
The president made the declaration in a nationwide broadcast and appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (rtd) as the state’s Sole Administrator.

Tinubu said the decision was taken to restore stability in the state that had been witnessing a political crisis following the feud between Governor Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The president said that N324 billion of the amount would be expended on infrastructure, N166 billion for health, N75.6 billion for education, and N31.4 billion for agriculture.
He said that by the provisions of the budget, agriculture is expected to generate about 6000 jobs, and appealed to the lawmakers to urgently pass the budget for the good of the state.
After reading the letter, Akpabio referred it to the Senate ad-hoc committee on Rivers emergency rule to revert to plenary as soon as practicable.
Similarly, the president’s letter was read at Thursday’s plenary by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen.
