President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening security cooperation with neighbouring Chad, pledging renewed joint action to combat terrorism and banditry across the Lake Chad region.

Tinubu made the pledge on Thursday while receiving the President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Déby, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Both leaders addressed a joint press conference focusing on regional security and strategies to tackle emerging threats.

Describing the visit as timely, Tinubu said it offered an opportunity to reinforce bilateral ties and deepen collaboration in addressing insecurity across the region.

He noted that Nigeria and Chad remain key partners under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), established to combat terrorism and other transnational threats in the Lake Chad Basin.

“Our discussions centred on the security challenges facing our region. Together, we are committed to eliminating acts of terror and ensuring the safety and sovereignty of our nations,” he said.

Tinubu stressed the shared responsibility of both countries to secure their borders and protect citizens, adding that sustained regional cooperation is vital for lasting peace.

He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Chad, noting efforts to build on past legacies to promote stability and development.

The President said improved security would enhance trade, economic cooperation, and social integration, while revealing that talks also covered broader collaboration with neighbouring countries, including Niger.

The visit marks Déby’s first official trip to Nigeria since Tinubu attended his inauguration in May 2024.
