President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the 25.735 km Ogbia-Nembe road, including seven bridges, connecting approximately 14 riverine communities in the Ogbia and Nembe local government areas of Bayelsa State.

The commissioning was part of the events marking his first anniversary in office.

The road project, initiated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in partnership with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), links the communities of Ogbia, Emakalakala, Akipelai, Etiama, Nembe Bassambiri, Ogbolomabiri, and others by road.

Residents in these communities expressed relief at having a road connection instead of relying on river travel.

The project, first initiated in 1940, saw actual construction begin in 2005 under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, with then NDDC Managing Director Chief Timi Alaibe playing a key role.

Representing President Tinubu at the commissioning weekend, Minister of Niger Delta Development, Engr Abubakar Momoh, said the project would significantly ease the residents’ hardships by providing easier access to other parts of the country.

He stressed the importance of partnerships, calling on other international oil companies (IOCs) to follow Shell’s example, noting that Chevron has also undertaken similar projects in the region.
