President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday commissioned the Karu Satellite Town Water Supply Network, extending potable water to thousands of residents in Karu, Orozo, Jikwoyi, Kurudu and neighbouring communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning ceremony, Tinubu described the project as a fulfilment of his administration’s commitment to improving access to basic services in underserved communities.
“We are here not just to cut a ribbon but to breathe life into a fundamental human right. Today, we declare that the era of neglect of satellite communities is over,” he said.
The President recalled that during the commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project in 2025, he promised that the benefits would be extended beyond the city centre to satellite towns.
According to him, the administration fulfilled that pledge by approving and funding the Karu Water Supply Project, executed by CGC Nigeria Limited.

Tinubu disclosed that the project delivered more than 194 kilometres of secondary and tertiary pipeline networks, bringing treated water directly to homes and businesses in Karu and adjoining communities.

He commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for driving infrastructure development across the territory and urged residents to protect public facilities from vandalism and illegal connections.

The President further announced that similar water projects are being replicated in Bwari and other area councils as part of efforts to promote inclusive development.

Earlier, Wike said the project was completed in less than one year after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the FCT Administration and CGC Nigeria Limited in September 2024.

“Because of the President’s directive for early release of funds captured in the national budget, today, in less than one year, you have come back to commission the provision of water in Karu,” he said.

Wike noted that the project forms part of the administration’s strategy to bridge the infrastructure gap between Abuja city centre and satellite towns.

In her remarks, the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, described the project as a major boost to public health, sanitation and residents’ quality of life.

The Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, said the project involved the installation of about 190 kilometres of pipeline and other supporting facilities, extending water supply from the existing Karu reservoir to previously underserved communities, including Kurudu, Jikwoyi and Orozo.

He said the project would significantly improve access to potable water and support socio-economic development in the affected communities.
