President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday inaugurated the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council in Imo State with the aim to foster unity and collaboration among traditional leaders in the southern region of the country.

The Oni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, was appointed as the Chairman of the council, with the Obi of Obinugwu, HRH Eze Cletus Illomuanya, and HRM King Jaja of Opopo, Dandeson Douglas Jaja, serving as co-chairmen. HRM Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi 1, Dein of Agbor, was designated as the Secretary of the council.

The president was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, who conveyed Tinubu’s support for the council.

Akume emphasised the president’s respect for the traditional institution and acknowledged the vital role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s cultural and intellectual landscape, adding that Nigeria’s diversity, coupled with the guidance of traditional leaders, would drive the nation forward.

Imo State governor, Hope Uzodinma, the host of the event, urged the newly inaugurated council to work towards uniting with their northern counterparts. Uzodinma encouraged the council to support President Tinubu’s administration, not as blind loyalty but as a recognition of his efforts towards economic growth and local governance reform. He expressed optimism about increased involvement of traditional leaders in governance and highlighted the temporary hardships caused by economic reforms as necessary for long-term recovery.

In his remarks, the chairman of council, the Oni of Ife, commended Governor Uzodinma for his vision in uniting the Southern Protectorate. Ogunwusi reflected on the historic nature of the event, emphasising that it signified a commitment to national unity and cooperation with the northern regions. He expressed gratitude to Uzodinma for his efforts and affirmed the council’s dedication to promoting peace and understanding within southern Nigeria.

Notable attendees included Yobe State governor, Mai Mala Buni, Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun, and members of the National Assembly.
